Itinerary |
First part of the trip - Sepilok (Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre):
After a very short flight within Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan (included in the package) we will arrive to the outskirts of the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. This palce was set up in 1964 and is the best known of the four orangutan rehabilitation centres in the world. Sepilok is a sanctuary for injured, orphaned or rescued orangutans who are trained how to survive in the forest; a learning process that can take years. Upon graduation rehabilitated orangutan are released into the surrounding forest. Many of the orangutan living in the forest return to the centre at the twice daily feeding times, giving visitors a unique chance to get close to orangutan. Since opening Sepilok has successfully released over one hundred orangutan into their natural forest habitat. We will spend 2 nights so we have a good chance to see the orangutans in the wild. Borneo is home to some of the richest biodiversity globally with its dense forests providing vital habitat for a number of species of conservation significance.
Second part of the trip: Jungle and Hot Springs.
After a short domestic flight we will head to Gaya Island. The island has superb beaches; walking trails through the rainforest where you will see an array of bird life, wild boar, monitor lizards and possibly some macaque monkeys and great snorkelling. Set within a marine park, our resort is located in an area where human activities have already been restricted, but the resort has always aspired to embrace a proactive role in embarking on conservation programmes to preserve the beauty of its natural environment, better protect the local wildlife and raise awareness for sustainable seafood choices.
